with Ann Whitaker Style, Brisbane

If you're here, you're probably curious, and possibly a little uncertain, about what Colour Analysis and Personal Styling actually involves, what to expect, and whether it's right for you. These are exactly the right questions to be asking.

Below you'll find honest answers to the things women ask me most often. If something isn't covered here, I'd love to hear from you directly at [email protected] or book in for a 20 minute clarity call with me.

What is colour analysis?

Colour analysis is the professional process of discovering which colours genuinely enhance your natural colouring, your skin tone, undertone, eye colour and natural hair colour and which colours work against you.

Using a set of professional colour drapes in controlled natural light, Ann assesses how each colour family interacts with your unique features. The result is a personalised colour palette specific to you, not based on trends, not based on what you like, but on what genuinely makes you look and feel your best.

In nearly 19 years of working with women, I never tire of seeing the difference a person's best colour shades will make their skin and I see colour analysis change the way women shop, dress and feel about themselves. Once you know your colours, everything becomes easier, shopping, dressing and managing your wardrobe all make sense, reducing overwhelm and boosting self-confidence.

Who is colour analysis best suited for?

Colour analysis is for any woman who wants to stop guessing and start feeling genuinely confident about how she dresses.

It is particularly valuable if you:

Feel like your wardrobe is full but nothing quite works together

Find shopping overwhelming or consistently buy things you never wear

Have noticed that some colours make you look tired or washed out but you are not sure why

Are navigating a life transition, a new role, menopause, divorce, a change in your hair colour, and you feel like your style no longer reflects who you are

Want to look polished and put-together without spending more time or money than necessary

Are preparing for increased visibility in business, a speaking role, or professional photography

If you have ever stood in front of your wardrobe and felt stuck, colour analysis gives you the clarity to move forward with confidence.

What happens during a colour consultation?

Your consultation takes place in my studio in Kenmore, Brisbane, in a room designed specifically for accurate colour work, with the natural light conditions that professional colour analysis requires.

We begin with a conversation about you, your lifestyle, your wardrobe, what's working and what isn't. Then we move into the draping process, where I work through a series of professional colour drapes around your face, assessing how each one interacts with your skin tone and natural colouring. You will see the difference for yourself in real time, this is one of the most eye-opening parts of the experience.

Once your season is confirmed, I will introduce you to makeup colours in your new palette and then try every one of the sample drapes in your season on you and we explore these together to find your top colours within that palette and talk through how to start incorporating them into your wardrobe and your life. You leave with a colour swatch and handy case, a booklet explaining your season, a pinterest seasonal board, videos and photos from your consultation and an invitation to my client community group, but most importanly you leave with clarity, practical guidance and a result you can use every day.

Is colour analysis worth it?

For most women, colour analysis is one of the most practical and confidence-building investments they make. Knowing your colours removes the guesswork from shopping, helps you stop wasting money on clothes that never feel quite right, and makes it easier to build a wardrobe that works together consistently. Clients of Ann Whitaker Style regularly describe their colour consultation as a turning point in how they dress, shop, and feel about getting dressed each morning, as perfectly described by a recent client Lynsey below.

"Ann has this incredible ability to help you see yourself differently. It's not just about colours - it's about confidence. Understanding which colours work WITH your natural colouring means you stop second-guessing every purchase and start feeling amazing in what you wear. The difference it's made to how I feel getting dressed every day has been remarkable.

And the practical side? Game changer. My little swatch key ring lives in my handbag and shopping is now SO much easier. No more buying things that sit in the wardrobe with the tags still on! I know exactly what I'm looking for and why."

What is the difference between seasonal colour analysis and other methods?

Seasonal colour analysis groups colours into four seasons - Spring, Summer, Autumn, and Winter - based on the warmth, depth, and clarity of your natural colouring. It is one of the most established and widely used frameworks in professional colour consultation and is seen as the Gold Standard. Some practitioners use expanded systems of 12 or 16 seasons or tonal qualities, in my opinon these are less accurate and more likely to end up with clients accidentally straying off palette. Once we have you in your home season I will then demonstrate all of that season's colour drapes on you to find your top colours within that palette and give practical advice on transitioning to your season.

At Ann Whitaker Style, the focus is always on finding what genuinely works for your unique colouring through professional colour draping, rather than fitting you into a category based on general characteristics alone. The result is a personalised colour blueprint that feels completely specific and accurate to you, because it has been tailored to your individual skintone.

Is AI Colour Analysis Accurate?

AI colour analysis is not accurate and cannot replace professional in-person colour analysis. Online quizzes and AI-based colour tools are unable to assess how colours physically interact with your unique skin tone, undertone, and natural colouring in real light. Accurate colour analysis requires a trained consultant, physical colour drapes, and controlled natural lighting conditions.

For a result you can trust, an in-person professional consultation is the only reliable option. Colour Analysis is experiential, you actually see and experience the difference the right colour tones make to your skin, this experience is what makes the most difference.

If you've tried an online tool and felt unsure about your result, that uncertainty is well-founded. I'd love to show you the difference a professional draping makes - you can book your consultation at annwhitaker.com.au/colour-analysis

Will I have to throw my whole wardrobe out?

No, absolutely not, that is never the intention of having your colours analysed (unless of course you want to!) We discuss how to start to incorporate your new colours into your existing wardrobe so you transition to a more colourful you., you will be buying new clothes in the course of the year, now you just buy more strategically and in the right shades. Often my ladies find they already own some of their colours, sometimes they are already predominately getting it right.

Most women leave their consultation feeling relieved they finally understand why things felt "off" and genuinely excited about getting dressed again. That shift in confidence is one of the most common benefits my clients tell me about.

Can I do colour analysis if I have grey or white hair?

Yes, absolutely, in fact that transition into our natural colour and silver sparkles is often the reason many clients come to see me.

Grey and white hair changes the overall contrast of your colouring, which can shift which shades work best for you. Many women find that the colours that suited them in their 30s feel slightly off now, without quite knowing why. Colour analysis gives you a clear, current answer based on exactly how you look today.

Some of the most striking results I see are on women with silver or white hair, the right colours alongside beautiful grey hair can be genuinely stunning.

Can I do colour analysis if I have coloured hair?

Yes, absolutely, The majority of women these days colour their hair, and it does not prevent an accurate colour analysis.

Hair colour is taken into account during your consultation for contrast levels, but the most important factors in colour analysis are your skin tone and undertone, and these remain constant regardless of what your hair looks like. Since hair colour is a colour influence, if it is not your natural shade, I will cover it for the analysis portion of the consultation to ensure an accurate reading.

If you are considering changing your hair colour, we will be advising which shades would work best with your natural colouring and colour palette, so you can make more confident decisions at the salon too.

One thing I would suggest is that you avoid colouring your hair just before a session, rather schedule it a few days after your colour analysis consultation, feel free to get in touch and we can chat about timing: [email protected]

What if I have already had my colours done elsewhere?

A previous colour analysis is never wasted, but it is worth knowing that results can vary depending on the method used, the experience of the consultant, the size of the group you were in, and whether it was done in daylight and how much time has passed since your analysis was done.

I am seeing a lot of ladies come through my studio who have had an online or AI generated consultation and they are often confused by the results.

If your result never quite felt right, or you have struggled to apply it practically, and you would like a fresh perspective, or simply want to deepen your understanding of your palette and how to use it, I would love to work with you. Get in touch at annwhitaker.com.au/connect and we can find the right option for you.

What results do I receive after my consultation?

At the end of your consultation you leave with a clear understanding of your colour season, your most flattering shades within that palette, and practical guidance on how to use your colours when shopping, getting dressed and building your wardrobe. We will also discuss using your colour palette for makeup, glasses, nails, jewellery, accessories and find your best metals.

Everything is explained thoroughly during your session so that you genuinely understand not just what your colours are, but why they work for you. This understanding is what makes the difference, you will be able to apply it confidently on your own, for life.

Can I do Colour Analysis Online?

Yes, online colour analysis consultations are available at Ann Whitaker Style for clients throughout Australia who are unable to attend an in-person session in Brisbane. I would always suggest doing an in person consultation unless it is logistically impossible as an in-person consultation allows for the most precise colour draping assessment. An online consultation involved you filling in a pre-set form and then we meet on Zoom to discuss your palette, I pride myself that my online consultations still deliver genuine, practical guidance on your personal colour palette. What happens if I am unable to make my consultation?

If you are unable to make your consultation due to illness or unforeseen circumstance, please contact me as soon as possible and we will arrange to reschedule it to another suitable date.
