Your Best Neutral Might Surprise You

When you think about wardrobe neutrals, what comes to mind?

Black? White? Beige? Navy?

They’re the colours we’re often told are the “safe” choices, the ones that go with everything and belong in every wardrobe.

But your best neutral might not be one of those colours at all.

Finding Your Best Neutral

For some people, black is beautifully grounding. For others, it can feel too harsh. Some people come alive in warm camel or chocolate, while others look effortlessly elegant in soft grey, navy or taupe.

We often choose neutrals because they feel easy and practical. Black, in particular, has become a wardrobe staple for so many women. It’s easy to find, easy to style and seems to work with everything.

But just because a colour is considered a “universal” neutral doesn’t mean it is the most flattering colour for you.

As you can see in my comparison below, black can actually make me look harder, older, and less approachable. It’s so heavy, it casts shadows and draws all the attention away from me and straight to the fabric, and in real life black on me aging, and as a woman in her late 50's that is not something I want to enhance.

When I switch black out for a rich French Navy, everything changes. It instantly softens my face, brings life back to my skin, and makes me look so much more dynamic and alive.

That’s why I don’t believe there’s one perfect universal set of neutrals that works for everyone. Your best neutrals are the ones that work with your natural colouring, rather than the ones that fashion dictates are "in" this season.

Your Neutrals Are the Foundation of Your Wardrobe

When your neutral is right for you, you may notice that your skin looks brighter, your features look more defined and your overall appearance feels more harmonious.

Once identified your best neutrals becomes the foundation of your wardrobe, helping you create outfits that feel cohesive, polished and easy to wear.

Instead of automatically reaching for black because it’s “easy,” you start choosing the shades that actually make you look and feel your best.

Perhaps your go-to trousers become a beautiful French Navy. Maybe your jacket is a soft taupe rather than black. Your handbag could be a rich chocolate, while your shoes might be a warm camel.

You can then introduce your most flattering colours through tops, scarves, accessories and statement pieces.

This creates a wardrobe where everything feels easier to combine because your colours naturally work together.

You don’t have to give up black completely if you love it. The idea is simply to understand whether it is working for you and where it might work best within your wardrobe.
