Why an App Can't Tell You Which Colours Suit You

November 01, 2026•4 min read

You uploaded a selfie, answered a few questions, and a screen told you that you are a "Soft Autumn". Then you opened your wardrobe and wondered why even though AI told you these items suited you, half of them still feels wrong.

If this sounds familiar, you're in good company. I hear this all the time, and it is not a sign that you got something wrong, you just received poor information.

In this post, I'll explain why AI colour tools so often miss the mark, and what real colour analysis does differently, so you can make confident choices from here.

Why AI colour analysis is so tempting

When you're tired of wasting money on clothes that don't work, a free quick answer is appealing. It feels simple, private and low risk.

Many women tell me they tried an app first because they wanted to understand themselves a little before committing to anything. That is a sensible instinct, but can lead you astray, especially when it tells you what you want to hear.

What a camera can't see

Colour is never judged in isolation. It is judged against your skin, your natural hair colour and your eyes, in natural (not artificial) light.

A phone camera adjusts for brightness, warmth and contrast before the image is even saved. Add your screen settings and the lighting in your room, and the colours you are looking at on the screen are already different from the ones in real life.

So when an app analyses your photo, it is analysing a version of you that has been already altered several times over, even if you didn't put a filter on it yourself.

Why your skin's response matters

In a professional consultation, I hold fabrics in different colours next to your face, one after another. We watch what happens together, so you actually experience it and learn the difference different shades make.

Some colours lift your skin, brighten your eyes and soften shadows. Others draw attention to dark circles, make your skin look sallow or leave you looking tired.

Some add bulk, weight and make you look puffy, others drain colour from you making you look washed out and older.

That response is real and visible, and it can only be seen side by side, in person, under controlled lighting. This is why online quizzes and AI tools cannot accurately replace professional in-person colour analysis.

Your colouring changes, and that's normal

For women over 40, this matters even more. Hair softens or turns grey, skin tone shifts, and the colours that worked in your thirties may not be doing the same job now.

An app cannot account for that in a meaningful way. A trained eye can, and can show you why and help you understand whats working and what might be time to set aside.

This isn't about trends or about looking younger, although that is often a side benefit. It's about alignment, so that what you wear supports how you want to feel and be seen.

What changes when you know your colours

In over 19 years of working with women, I have seen the same shift again and again. Shopping becomes quicker. Decisions become easier. Your wardrobe starts working together, rather than being seperate individual outfits.

Women often tell me they feel more visible, and more like themselves, they get compliments and feel more in control. That's the quiet power of clarity.

What if you've already tried an app?

There is nothing to undo, but realise it might not actually be correct, I hear about a lot of misdiagnosis this way. The information you gathered is simply a starting point.

Bring along any results and we can look at them together. Sometimes there is a lot that holds up, and sometimes we find a different direction. Either way, you will understand the reason behind it.

To pull this together

AI tools can be a curious first step, but they can't replace seeing your colours on you, in real light, with someone who knows what to look for and you deserve guidance that is comprehensive, visual and specific to you.
