What Your Colours Are Really Saying in the Room

August 06, 20263 min read

Most people think about colour with emotion. Do I like this blue? Does this green feel like me? Is this colour ‘in’ this season? But colour is doing far more than reflecting your preferences. It is shaping how people read you before you have said a word.

If you have ever walked into a meeting, a client pitch, or onto a stage and felt like you weren't quite landing the way you wanted to, the issue might not be what you said. It might be what you were wearing.

Colour communicates before you do

In over 19 years of working with women on their colour and image, I have seen this play out again and again. Two women can wear the same cut of blazer, the same style of dress, and be read completely differently depending on the depth and balance of the colour they have chosen and how that relates to their unique colour and style blueprint.

This matters enormously for professionals and business owners who are walking into rooms where they want to be taken seriously. If you have ever felt unsure why you weren't quite landing the impression you intended, this is often the missing piece. In those first few seconds, a message about your capacity and capability has already been communicated without you saying a word.

Why most women get this wrong

Here's the thing. Most women choose colour based on what they have always worn, what is on trend, or what simply feels safe. None of that tells you what actually works with your own colouring, your own skin tone, and the message you want to send.

What most women don't realise is that the same colour can look polished and intentional on one person and washed out or overpowering on another. It is not about the colour in isolation. It is about how that colour sits against your natural colouring, and how it shifts the way your features and presence come through.

This is exactly why colour is not something you can guess your way through, no matter how many years of trial and error you put in.

A note on AI and online colour quizzes

You may have seen AI tools or online quizzes promising to tell you your colours from a photo, but these tools cannot accurately replicate a professional in-person colour analysis. True colour analysis requires real-life visual comparison and an assessment of how your skin actually responds to different tones under natural lighting. It is experiential, allowing you to see and understand what each tonal change is doing to your complexion, and a photo simply cannot capture that. It is not a shortcut I would responsibly recommend, no matter how convenient and quick it looks.

What changes once you know your colours

Once you understand your own colour palette, dressing for authority stops being guesswork. You stop standing in front of your wardrobe wondering what will work. You start reaching for pieces that consistently support the way you want to be perceived, whether that is leading a meeting, presenting to a board, or simply walking into your day feeling like yourself and knowing that the colour works for you.

This isn't about perfection. It's about alignment between how you feel and how you come across, so the two finally match.

Quick questions about colour and professional presence

Can colour really affect how I'm perceived at work? Yes. The depth and balance of the colours you wear influence how quickly people read you as credible, capable and put together, often within seconds of meeting you.

Can an AI colour analysis tool tell me my palette accurately? No. AI tools and online quizzes cannot accurately replicate a professional in-person colour analysis, which relies on real-life visual comparison and how your skin responds to different tones under natural lighting.

The takeaway

The colours you wear are quietly shaping how people experience your authority and presence, often more than you realise. Knowing your own colours, properly and accurately, takes the guesswork out of dressing for the impression you actually want to make.
