"I Don't Know What Suits Me Anymore" and What to Do About It
Have you ever stood in front of a full wardrobe and felt like nothing in it was quite you?
One of the most common things women tell me is, "I just don't know what suits me anymore." If you've said it too, please know you are not alone in this, it's unfortunately a very common problem, but the good news is that is it also a fixable problem.
By the end of this post, you'll understand why it happens and have three gentle steps to start feeling clearer.
Why it happens after 40
Our lives change faster than our wardrobes do. A new role, a career change, menopause, a divorce, children leaving home, can all shift how you want to present yourself.
Our bodies change too. Clothes that once felt effortless can sit differently now, and nobody prepared us for that bit!
The hidden cost of feeling unsure
When you're not sure what suits you, shopping simply becomes impossible. You don't know what you are looking for any longer, so you default to buying something in desperation that was probably never going to feel good.
You wear it once and then it languishes in your wardrobe as "yet another" expensive mistake, and then the guilt and negative self-talk spiral.
When it comes to buying clothing and getting ready, decision fatigue builds quickly, especially if you're juggling a busy workload or you find choices overwhelming. Getting dressed becomes another task instead of something that supports you and brings you joy.
It can also affect how visible you feel. When you feel that your clothes don't reflect who you are today, it's easy to fade into the background and hide.
Step one: Notice what you already love
Start with what is already hanging in your wardrobe, whether it fits you at the moment or not. Pull out the five pieces you reach for most, and the five that make you feel good when you wear them.
Look for patterns. You might notice a certain neckline, a fabric that feels comfortable, or a colour that gets you compliments.
These are clues, not accidents. They tell you far more than any trend report can.
Step two: Understand your colouring
Colour is often the quickest way to feel more like yourself. The right shades near your face brighten your skin and make you look rested and clear.
This is where professional help makes a real difference. Every single person who comes into my colour studio is blown away by the difference a simple change of colour tone makes to their skin.
Online quizzes and AI colour tools can't accurately replace an in-person consultation, because true colour analysis relies on real-life visual comparison and seeing how your skin responds.
Step three: Choose fewer, better-fitting pieces
You don't need more clothes. You need the right ones.
A smaller wardrobe in colours and shapes that work for you is easier to dress from and easier to shop for. Aim for pieces that mix and match, so one good jacket works with several outfits.
Be kind to yourself in the changing room
If something doesn't fit the way you expected, it isn't a verdict on your body. It simply means the cut or fabric isn't right for you, or it needs a simple tweak to fit perfectly.
Style is a tool for confidence and clarity, not perfection. You have permission to take this one step at a time.
To pull this together
Feeling unsure about what suits you is a very normal part of the changes that come with being over 40, and it can be turned around with the right guidance. Start with what you love, learn your colours, and let your wardrobe become smaller and simpler.
