How to Choose Accessories That Finish Your Outfit

How to Choose Accessories That Finish Your Outfit (Without Feeling Overdone)

October 23, 2026•4 min read

Have you ever put an outfit on and felt like something was missing? So you add a necklace, some earrings, maybe a scarf… and suddenly it all feels like too much. Or you're left feeling uncertain and overwhelmed.

If this sounds familiar, you're in good company. It's one of the most common things women tell me.

Jewellery in particular can feel confusing, so it often gets left in the too hard basket and skipped altogether. Yet the right jewellery for you can make a massive difference to how an outfit works.

Getting accessories right isn't about rules or trends. It's about understanding what works for you.

Accessories should complement you, not compete with you.

By the end of this post, you'll have five practical principles to help you choose jewellery, bags and finishing touches with confidence.

1. Start With Your Colour Palette

Metal tones and accessory colours work best when they harmonise with your natural colouring. Gold, silver, rose gold and pewter all sit differently against your skin, hair and eyes.

As a general guide, my Springs and Autumns suit gold better, while my Summers and Winters are better in silver or platinum.

What I've seen work, time and time again, is continuity. That might be a palette running from head to toe, or a metal or colour repeated across the outfit. A green top echoed in your belt, shoes or earrings, for example, ties the whole look together so the eye travels smoothly rather than jumping around.

When your accessories sit within your colour palette, they look intentional rather than added on.

2. Match the Scale to Your Frame

As a general guide, petite features can be overwhelmed by oversized pieces. A stronger bone structure can carry larger pieces, and delicate jewellery on a stronger frame can look lonely and lost.

Here's the thing, though. Scale isn't only about your physical frame. Your clothing personality matters too. In over 19 years of working with women, I've seen many clients with bolder, more flamboyant personalities who suit larger scale or very glitzy jewellery, even with a small frame.

This is where it becomes personal. Try a few different sizes in front of the mirror and notice which pieces feel like you, and which ones seem to wear you.

3. Choose One Focal Point

Statement earrings or a bold necklace? Generally, choose one rather than both. A single focal point gives the eye somewhere to rest and keeps the look polished.

A simple way to find your balance is a quick photo test. Take one photo wearing one statement piece, then another wearing both, and compare them side by side. Which feels more like you? Is one better than the other for that particular outfit?

Like most style guidance, this isn't a hard rule. Some of my bolder personalities can pull off both, so have a play and see what happens.

4. Repeat the Mood of Your Outfit

Accessories work best when they echo the overall feeling of what you're wearing. A structured outfit pairs naturally with a structured bag. A soft, flowing dress sits beautifully with softer, more fluid accessories.

This consistency is what creates polish. Before you reach for your jewellery, think about whether the accessory genuinely suits both the outfit and the location. Is it a client meeting, a relaxed lunch with friends or a speaking event? Let your accessories carry that same message.

5. Prioritise Quality Over Quantity

One beautiful handbag can elevate dozens of outfits.

That doesn't mean it has to be designer. It simply needs to be a well-made piece that's right for your colouring, your personality and, of course, the occasion. A smaller collection of accessories you love will serve you far better than a drawer full of pieces that never quite feel right.

You don't need more accessories. You need the right ones.

Accessories Say More Than You Think

Accessories are the finishing touch. They signal intention, and they can subtly express your personality too.

When you understand your colour direction, clothing personality, personal scale and image style, accessorising stops being guesswork.

You stop second guessing.
You start selecting.

In Summary

  • Choose metals and colours that harmonise with your natural colouring, whether that's gold, silver or platinum

  • Match the scale of your pieces to both your frame and your clothing personality

  • Let one piece be the focal point, and use photos to test the balance

  • Make sure your accessories suit the mood of the outfit and the location

  • Invest in fewer, better pieces that suit your colouring, personality and the occasion
