Colour Consultant, Image Consultant or Personal Stylist: What's the Difference?
If you've ever searched for help with your colours or your style, you've probably seen all three titles. Colour consultant. Image consultant. Personal stylist.
They're often used as if they mean the same thing. They don't, and choosing the right one can save you time, money and a lot of second-guessing.
In over 19 years as a colour and image consultant, I've often had people assume they're all the same and call me a stylist. In reality, an image consultant like me can do the work of all three, though it doesn't work the other way around.
Here's a clear explanation of what each one does, so you can choose the support that fits what you actually want.
What a colour consultant does
A colour consultant focuses on one thing: the colours that work with your natural colouring.
Using professional colour drapes in good natural light, they look at how different tones interact with your skin, eyes and hair. Some colours lift your face. Others drain it.
You leave knowing your colour season and your personal palette, usually with a colour swatch to shop with. It's a focused, practical session, and the knowledge lasts for life. This is where I started, 19 years ago.
What an image consultant does
An image consultant looks at the whole picture of how you present yourself, with colour as one important part.
Alongside your colours, image consulting usually covers:
- Your body shape, and the cuts and fabrics that flatter your unique proportions
- Your style personality, so your clothes feel like you and visibly express your uniqueness
- Makeup, hair and grooming that support your natural colouring
- Wardrobe management and successful shopping: how to spot what works for your body, your colouring and your style, and apply that to your lifestyle
- How your image supports your individual goals, whether that's a new role, a business or a new chapter of life
Image consultants are usually formally trained across all of these areas. The aim is education and understanding, so you can make confident choices on your own long after the session.
What a personal stylist does
A personal stylist is more hands-on with your clothes themselves.
Stylists often help with wardrobe edits, creating outfits from what you already own, editorial shoots and shopping for events. They'll usually ask about your likes and dislikes, and many specialise in dressing you for a particular occasion.
Many are wonderful at putting looks together and keeping an eye on what's in the shops right now. Some work closely with specific brands or shops, and some work on commission.
The focus tends to be on what to wear now, rather than why it works for you. Not every stylist is trained in colour analysis or body shape, so it's worth asking.
The difference at a glance
| Colour consultant | Image consultant | Personal stylist | |
|---|---|---|---|
| Main focus | Your best colours | Your whole image | Your clothes and outfits |
| You leave with | Your palette and swatch | Colours, styles, body shape and style personality guidance | Outfits, a wardrobe edit or new pieces |
| Best for | Clarity on colour | Lasting confidence and a full reset | Hands-on help with what to wear now |
Which one do you need?
It depends on where you're starting from.
- You want to stop buying colours that don't suit you: a colour consultant or image consultant is the perfect first step.
- You feel you've lost your sense of style, want a coordinated wardrobe, or you're navigating a big change: image consulting gives you the full picture, from colour to body shape to style personality.
- You already know what suits you and want help pulling fashionable outfits together: a personal stylist can be a great fit.
What I've seen time and time again is this. Styling without understanding your colours and body shape can look lovely on the day, though it's hard to repeat on your own. Once you understand why something works, every future shopping trip gets easier.
Questions to ask before you book
- Where did you train, and in what?
- Do you use professional colour drapes, in person?
- What will I take home with me?
- Will I understand how to do this myself afterwards?
Where I fit
I'm a colour and image consultant, trained in the UK in 2007 and working with clients continuously ever since. My work starts with your colours and goes further into body shape, style personality and makeup, so you leave with the understanding to dress with confidence on your own.
Once someone has worked with me, I also offer personal shopping, wardrobe reviews and on-call services.
If you'd like the colour piece first, my colour consultation is the place to start, and you can always come back and add more services later. If you'd like the whole picture in one or two days, that's exactly what we work through together in my VIP Bespoke Colour, Image & Style day.
In short
A colour consultant finds your best colours. An image consultant helps you understand your whole image. A personal stylist helps you put outfits together. Knowing the difference helps you choose the support that will make the biggest difference for you.
A good colour and image consultant will do all of the above. Some of my clients simply learn their colours, and that answers all their questions. Others first worked with me on their colours and style, and now see me regularly for seasonal shopping and wardrobe updates.
